Explore the history and rules of magic. Discover what’s in a magician’s or illusionist’s bag of tricks…and more. Practice and learn new tricks that will entertain your family and friends.
Baker’s Craft
What is it about seeing that tall, white baker’s hat that makes baking seem so fun? It’s because it is fun, and you get to eat what you make. Spend time in our professional kitchen, where you will learn to create tasty treats and feel like a real baker. Using lecture, demonstration and group activities, our master baker will coach campers through all the steps of measuring, weighing, kneading, testing…and tasting.
 Ceramic Art
Popular each summer, our ceramics class presents the most up-to-date techniques taught by a professional ceramist in our large studio. Learn a variety of hand building, glazing and decorative secrets as you discover the beauty of the art. Create original pieces that you are proud to take home for family and friends.
Comic Book Creations
Learn to create your own comic book. It is possible in this class, which teaches cartooning, comics, caricature and sequential art. All you have to bring is an imagination for characters and stories and a love for drawing. Don’t worry, we’ll cover all the basics: penciling, inking, lettering, shading techniques, rough sketches and writing the story.
 Desktop Publishing
Computers have become an important tool in our lives, as we use them mostly for sending e-mail and searching the Internet. But there’s so much more, like desktop publishing, which is used to create newspapers and magazines, brochures and newsletters, greeting cards and comic books. This course will cover the basics: layout, photo scan and design. (Members of this class will work with NWS Camp News.)
Digital Music
You love music, but did you know how compositions are arranged and recorded? Learn and use multi-track music looping programs and practice by crafting your own pieces of music. If you play an instrument, maybe the teacher will let you bring it with you to record that and add it to the mix. Create music as a solo artist or collaborate with others to form a band.
 Digital Photography
More than an introduction to taking photographs with a digital camera, we will help you find new skills to shine in this ever-evolving art form. You’ll learn about shutter speeds, adjusting the exposure to maximize your ability and using F-stop, flash and various speeds. With this new knowledge and more practice, you’ll feel like a professional with your abilities as a digital photographer. (This is a double-period class. Campers must provide their own digital camera.)
Drawing FUNdamentals
Drawing is more than an art. It’s a com-munication tool. And learning to draw is simpler than you think, so long as you have confidence in yourself and practice what you learn. Learn drawing skills in this class to use on portraits, landscapes and other subjects. We’ll rely on a variety of techniques to cover the principles of drawing, such as line, value, perspective, texture and composition.
Flash Animation
Many games and animations that you see on the Internet were created with Flash, a drawing and animation program that lets anyone who knows how to use it join in the fun. Learn how by starting with the basics of animating and ending by making your own unique, short creation.
 Let’s Knit
Learn this relaxing and creative skill and you’ll be able to shape yarn into wearable art. Our expert knitter will start you on the basics, providing you with the knitting needles and enough yarn to learn various helpful stitches. There may be time to go to a yarn store to pick up your very own needles and yarn to make simple projects. Once you know how to knit, it’s a skill that will last a lifetime.
NWS Camp News
You love to be in the know and be the first to tell a story. Hone your reporter’s skills and join the newsletter team. We build a newsletter that everyone at camp gets to read and take home. You’ll learn about reporting and gathering content, graphic layout and design, as well as an introduction to desktop publishing.
Painting Escapades
This art form can be challenging at first, but once you learn how to use the tools and master the techniques, you can bring all those incredible details in a scene to life—at least on a canvas. Painting allows you to develop your own personal style and explore your creativity. Remember, with a little practice, the idea in your mind can become a painting at the end of your brush.
 Paper-Mache
Paper-mache is from the French word “papier-mache,” which means “chewed-up paper,” a style of art that uses paper and paste to create a figurine. Our paper-mache class teaches the basics and provides the materials, then allows campers to be creators limited only by their imaginations. Whether you are into animals, masks, puppets or piñatas, leave this class as a paper mache artist.
Photography in Black & White
What do you get when you combine technique, creativity, a keen eye and a steady hand? It’s photography, and it’s loads of fun. In this class, you’ll learn the basics before taking captivating pictures and developing them into your own black & white photos. Master basic camera functions, including composition, using correct exposures, processing film and making a final print. (Campers must provide a manual 35-mm camera with a 50 mm lens and light meter. This is a double-period class.)
Play Production
Be a part of the Summer Camp’s very own performance company and finish by putting on a show for everyone to enjoy. We’ll choose or create a short play, rehearse the scenes, build sets for the story, choose the costumes that performers will where and, finally, perform the play for the rest of our summer community.
 Print Making
Perhaps you did potato printing in kindergarten by using a carved potato on a piece of paper? Now you will be surprised at just what you can do, not only on paper, but even fabric, as you’re introduced to a variety of print-making applications. You may even create cards, posters or T-shirts using materials that are water-based and non-toxic.
Stained Glass Originals
Stained glass is an art and a craft: It requires both the imagination of design and the skills to create the piece. Starting with a your own original pattern, a stained glass artist will instruct you in the skills required for soldering, glass cutting and working with copper foil. When you’re finished, you’ll go home with an original stained glass piece that will remind you of a summer at The Northwest School.
 Watercolor Wonders
Is painting something you want to do for fun and relaxation, or are you serious about it? Either way works in our watercolor class, where we focus on one of our most enduring art forms, and allow you to capture your ideas and the splendor of the world with swipes of a paintbrush. We’ll start out with the basics, but before you know it you’ll be using a rainbow of colors to paint your very own masterpiece.
Wear Your Art
Dyes, embroidery and colorful designs are just a few of the ways you can dress up your clothes and help you dress more distinctively. Here’s your chance to be a fashion leader. Who says you have to be a famous designer to create clothes others would want to wear? Just bring a personal item of clothing (approved by the teacher) and you may soon be thinking about having your very own clothing label.
