Emergency Info

In the case of an emergency, The Northwest School is prepared to meet the basic needs for up to three days of whoever is in the building. Each classroom and area can supply food, water, first aid equipment, warmth and makeshift bathroom facilities for up to 18 people. Supplies are replenished regularly, in accordance with standard emergency preparation practices. Most of our faculty members are trained in basic first aid, and many are certified in Advanced First Aid and CPR.

For the past ten years, our faculty has included a quarter-time Emergency Preparedness Coordinator. In addition to five fire drills a year, a large-scale all-school drill is held annually, first with the faculty and then with the students. It simulates a disaster, such as an earthquake, and, among other things, tests our ability to account for every student and adult. Students are well-trained in "drop/cover/hold" and other responses to earthquakes, and they learn safety responses should there be an intruder. An Incident Command Leader system is in place, with the Head of School as first in line, and various command centers are set up in the school to coordinate our response and as a check-in point for faculty.

Basic earthquake responses can be applied to other disasters and appropriate adjustments will be made, depending on the nature of the situation. The contact information listed below should be used to get information in a crisis. In the case of a disaster at school, cell phone use by students is strictly prohibited.
