Enrichment and Fun

Business Club
Running a successful business is all about making an honest profit. In Business Club you can run a business with other campers and become an entrepreneur in our Summer Camp store. All profits will be donated to charity at the end of the summer.

Chess Club
We’ll learn about and play chess in a class that promises action that is both exciting and competitive. Whether you know the slightest bit about this classic board game, just have an interest or are a master, you’ll fit right in. Prepare yourself for some serious playing.

Cool Collage
Collage is a visual art of gathering and assembling various materials (such as newspaper clippings, ribbons or photos) to create a single master-piece. You may have tried it, but have you ever been taught the secrets and finer points of this art form? You may want to remember every detail of a certain year at school, a family event or some of the favorite belongings in your life. Once you learn how to do it, collage can become a very satisfying way to express your creativity and immortalize the special things you have collected.

Dancing Shoes, Dancing You
Dust off those dancing shoes and get ready to be on your feet and show off your best moves. We’ll try to cover a variety of dancing styles—including perhaps hip-hop, salsa, line dancing and ballroom style—starting with learning the moves and finishing with performing for the camp.

Deal Me In
What’s your favorite card game? Crazy Eights? Gin Rummy? Hearts? Fifty-Two-Card Pick-Up? This class is all about having a good time with cards. You don’t have to know card games to sign up. Just limber up those fingers, get ready to shuffle a deck or two and play some of the most exciting card games on the planet.

Fashion Sense
What is chic and current in your home country, state or city? With fashion being so different all over the world, have you ever wondered what’s hot and what’s not in other places? We’ll discuss current and emerging trends, consider how fashion evolves and what fashions might look like in the future. In this class, you can create a fashion collection that might be good enough to show off.

Finger Foods and Snacks
Sometimes the best-tasting foods come in the smallest of packages. It doesn’t matter if you have cooking or baking experience. Only that you have an interest in foods that can be picked up with your fingers as either snacks or party favorites. In this lecture/demonstration/group activity class, we often create wonderful foods that don’t require cooking. Start your career as a finger-food gourmet, and take your ideas home to surprise your family.

Fun Science
Science can be complicated and astonishing, but it can definitely be fun. It’s a world that always leaves us amazed and awed. This class will engage you in science adventures, where all campers are transformed into fun scientists who perform experiments, take field trips and participate in large group activities. The best part is that you will have a lot of fun with science.

Glazing
Glaze-your-own pottery studios are everywhere these days, and here at The Northwest School, we, too, have our very own. Each camper will start with a plain ceramic piece and learn applications and choose colors for it. They will create the design for the decoration and, finally, stand back and admire their creation. Yours could make the perfect holiday, birthday or “just-because” gift.

Hot Lights, Cool Shades
Let the light out in style—from the bulb beneath your lampshade. Beautify plain lampshades with a variety of decorations, including paints, beads, jewels and glitter. No more will your lampshades be dull and boring. You can make them as wild or as sedate as your imagination allows. What a great gift for those who think you’re the best.

Impromptu Performances
If you have the ability to make things up on the spot or to be convincing without rehearsal, this class is for you. If you are interested in being more spontaneous, but aren’t sure how, this class teaches the secrets of improvisation and provides lot of practice, as well. Campers rave at how many laughs they have in this class, and they also notice improvement in their poise, leadership and teamwork.

Jewelry Jamboree
Jewelry isn’t just for girls, as today boys, too, wear bracelets, earrings, necklaces and rings. This introductory class is for both boys and girls who want to learn how to make their own jewelry. Learn how to design and construct jewelry to wear or give to friends. It’s a hobby that can last a lifetime. (There will be no soldering with hot metals.)

Juggling For Beginners
Juggling can look difficult and complicated, but once you get the hang of it, it’s really quite easy. We’ll start small, but soon you’ll be amazed at what you can do using balls, rings and other objects. By the time this class is over, you’ll increase your concentration and coordination, impress your friends and become the life of the party.

Law and Order
Keeping law and order on television seems easy, but what about real life? What are the laws that are most important to your life as a teenager? We¹ll discuss laws and examine how minors can break the law from the point-of-view of the police, lawyers, judges and victims. Your detective skills are a plus, but your curiosity is a must. (For ages 13 and above.)

Percussion Discussion
Do you have the beat? You don’t have to know how to drum to tap your hands on the table, beat on a coffee can to keep in time with the music, or tap on pots and pans with a spoon. But it helps. You’ll discover how important the percussionist is to any band or music ensemble. Learn and practice a variety of per-cussive techniques, which will help you keep the beat.

Puppet Theater
Everyone has a favorite puppet, but we probably don’t know about the many different types of puppets, including finger puppets, hand puppets, sock puppets, muppets, marionettes and shadow puppets. We’ll learn about this art form before you get to make your own sock or finger puppet. Finally, you can bring your puppet to life, giving it a voice and letting it tell jokes or stories in your own Puppet Theater.

Rocket Science
Have you heard the term, “It isn’t rocket science?” Well, this IS rocket science, the study of propelling objects into space. We’ve all seen rockets blast off from the ground, but what happens when they pass through the earth’s atmosphere? We’ll study rocket dynamics, various kinds of rockets and talk about where rocket science could take us in the future. Most enjoyable of all, we’ll make our own simple rockets in a safe environment.

Seattle Highlights
Seattle is famous for many reasons, including the Space Needle, coffee and Pearl Jam. But an exploration of The Northwest School’s home city could easily include a few other stops that you may or may not know about: Safeco Field and Quest Field (where our baseball and football teams play), the University of Washington campus with its lovely views of Mt. Rainier, and company headquarters of Amazon.com, Adobe, Boeing, Real Networks and Starbucks. Be prepared to go on several field trips in this class.

Simple Games
Leave your iPods, computers and cell phones at home, and let’s play simple games that are powered only by our imagination. Non-battery powered games are fun and a form of relaxation, plus they allow us to socialize. During this week, we’ll cover many of our favorites, such as board games, rock-paper-scissors, tug-of-war, musical chairs and hop scotch. Maybe we’ll learn games that we never even knew about.

Sing Your Socks Off
OK, be honest. When you’re by yourself, in your room or in the shower, do you like to sing out loud? Ever get together with friends and pretend you’re a music superstar? At The Northwest School, you no longer have to be shy about letting your voice be heard. This is not a music class, so there is no printed music, no auditions or evaluations. Just be ready to belt out a tune with a group of others that like to sing as much as you do.

Theater Fun
What would it be like to be on a movie screen or in the middle of a big stage? This acting class will be full of warm-up exercises and short skits, with a concentration on memorizing your lines and delivering them with the enthusiasm of pretending to be an award-winning actor.

Vocabulary Fun
Grow your vocabulary in a fun way, and you will go home talking like a whole different person. We’ll memorize as many vocabulary words as we can, and see how we’re doing through spelling bees and other fun vocabulary competitions for those in the class. There are thousands of words out there for you to discover. We’ll help you find some of them, and lead you on your way in finding the rest.

World Travelers
There’s not enough time to travel the world in a week, but we can do our best. Working with various maps and the Internet, we’ll talk about our planet: natural landmarks, man-made monuments, continental boundaries, languages, food, dress and a whole lot more. Can you teach us something about your country, while someone else in the class teaches you about theirs? That’s the fun of traveling the world together.
